The cathedral dates back to the 19th century, a time when Saint-Raphaël underwent a major refurbishment. Father Bernard, the head priest from 1882 to 1890, commissioned the architect Pierre Aubé to build a new church. Native from Lyon, Aubé got inspired both by Byzantine and Moorish architecture. Look up at the dome : it was drawn after Saint-Sophia in Istanbul.
